Virtual Hosting FAQ

What is a Virtual Domain?

A Virtual Domain means having your own domain name (http://www.yourcompany.com) without having to install expensive server hardware and software. With a Virtual Domain, you utilize our server's storage space, however you are still professionally represented via your own personal Internet web address domain name (www.yourcompany.com) and by your own personal e-mail address domain name (company@yourcompany.com).

Can I design my site on a Windows PC and host it on a Linux server?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to run Linux on your own computer in order for you to host your site on Linux platform. That is not true. Which operating system you run on your computer is irrelevant in making your decision. This means that if you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista on your computer for example, you can still choose Linux.

Will I be able to access my domain name with or without the www.?

Yes, you will be able to access the domain name with or without the www in front. For example, you could access your domain by going to "www.yourdomain.com" as well as "yourdomain.com".

Secondary Host Name: ns2.hostrock.com

What is PHP?

PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language. It is a tool that lets you create dynamic web pages. PHP-enabled web pages are treated just like regular HTML pages and you can create and edit them the same way you normally create regular HTML pages. Simply put, it is ASPs for UNIX.

Do you offer free Applications or Scripts?

Yes. We currently offer over 30 free applications and scripts with each advanced hosting plan.

Can we use our own CGI scripts, programs, etc?

Yes. All advanced plans are set up to allow you to install your and maintain your own scripts as long as they do not require root access to the dedicated server. There is no approval procedure and we have no problems with 99% of the scripts our clients use. However, if we find that you have chosen to install a large script that uses far too much processing power thereby jeopardizing the service to our other clients, we may ask you to remove that script or we may suspend your site.

Do you support SSL (Secure Transactions)?

Yes. Our advanced plans are set up with Apache SSL security enabled. All basic plans also come with shared SSL access. We also offer low-cost dedicated SSL certificates for our advanced clients. SSL certs require a static IP number.

What is an E-mail autoresponder?

An autoresponder will automatically reply to any e-mail sent to a particular address. For example, you may have an autoresponder for the address of info@yourname.com. Any email sent to this address will automatically be replied to by a robot (program). The robot will send back a preset message (that you set up and edit at any time). This is useful for creating "request more information" e-mail addresses or use as a vacation notice.

What is a POP3 E-mail account?

A POP3 e-mail account is simply an e-mail box that you can connect to using a Username and Password. It is a "full" e-mail account similar to the ones that your internet access provider provides for you. E-mail sent to your POP3 e-mail account resides within your "mailbox" on your mailserver until you download it with an e-mail software program. This e-mail address would not be redirected anywhere else. POP is the abbreviation for the term "Post Office Protocol".

What is an E-mail alias?

E-mail aliases allow you to set up numerous email addresses using your POP account. In your control panel, you can create literally anyname@yourdomain.com.

What do you mean by disk space?

Disk space refers to the amount of server disk storage your account is allocated. This space is used to store your html files, graphics, log files and all other files that make up your web site. POP mail messages are also counted against your space. 99% of all web sites hosted on our servers never exceed 500 MBs of space.

Do I need to transfer my domain registration service to host with Postrock?

No. You do not need to change your registration service to ours in order to host with us. You can keep your domain name registered with your current Registrar.

Do you support FrontPage Extensions?

If you use Microsoft FrontPage 2000, 2002 and 2004 to publish pages to the Web, you will need FrontPage or 2000 extensions supported. We support FrontPage Extensions free of charge.

What are the cost if I decide to upgrade plans later?

We do not charge any upgrade fees. If you are moving from a package that has no set-up fees to a package that includes set-up fees, you will need to pay those.

Protecting Mailboxes From Spam
05-14-2012
To protect your mailbox from undesirable correspondence, do not publish your e-mail address on Internet forums and switch on the server-side spam filter in your control panel provided by the SpamAssassin software. When you need to publish your e-mail address, create a disposable e-mail address - e-mail alias - for your primary e-mail address, and publish it instead. All messages sent to the e-mail alias will come into your mailbox. Once you start getting spam, remove that alias and create another one. If you have a mailbox at another domain or mail server, you may want to set up a disposable e-mail forwarder. We would advise that you do not read spam e-mails when you receive them, just delete them at once. Even if you have read them, do not respond to them and do not click the "click here to unsubscribe" URLs: spammers will then know that your e-mail address is valid and you will get even more spam.

Organizing Your Site Structure
05-07-2012
If you have an Advanced Plan, you may organize your site structure with subdomains. Subdomains are additional domain names that enable you to: 1) Organize logically the structure of your web site 2) Host additional web sites or parts of your web site on the same server without the need to pay for registration of additional domain names. An example of using subdomains: You have a web site your-product.com dedicated to promoting your software product. For publishing user's guides, tutorials and list of frequently asked questions, you can organize the subdomain 'userdocs' so that your users will be able to access online user documentation directly by visiting the domain name userdocs.your-product.com. To set up a subdomain click on the subdomains icon in your control panel.
